The Department of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, and Food opened on Tuesday, October 14, the application period for participation in the second edition of the National Awards for the Best Extra Virgin Olive Oils (EVOO) of Catalonia, corresponding to the year 2025.
The application period will close on November 19, and samples will be collected between November 20 and 30.
The award categories are as follows:
Extra virgin olive oils from large producers (batches of more than 3,000 liters):
Intense green fruity: the 5 best oils will be selected.
Medium green fruity: the 5 best oils will be selected.
Light green fruity: the 5 best oils will be selected.
Ripe fruity: the 5 best oils will be selected.
Extra virgin olive oils from small producers (batches between 500 and 3,000 liters):
Intense green fruity: the 5 best oils will be selected.
Medium green fruity: the 5 best oils will be selected.
Light green fruity: the 5 best oils will be selected.
Ripe fruity: the 5 best oils will be selected.
Organic olive oils: the 3 best organic oils will be selected. These must be certified by the Catalan Council of Organic Agricultural Production (CCPAE).
Monovarietal oils: the 10 best monovarietal oils, each from different varieties, will be selected.
Oils produced as part of projects for the recovery of native varieties: the 3 best oils will be selected.
Pairing, culinary combination, and gastronomic versatility: among the 3 best oils from either large or small producers, from the intense, medium, and light green fruity and ripe fruity categories, awards will go to the 3 oils that offer the best pairing options with different foods.
Packaging: the 3 oils presented in the most innovative and attractive packaging will be selected.
Oils from large producers: the 5 oils that obtain the highest overall score among those presented in this category will be awarded.
Oils from small producers: the 5 oils that obtain the highest overall score among those presented in this category will be awarded.
Requirements
According to the Department, applicants must take the following requirements into account:
When the company responsible collects the oil, participants must declare the number of liters in the batch and the capacity of the bottle used for packaging, so that, if the oil is awarded, the corresponding number of official award stickers can be issued.
The minimum batch volume to qualify for the awards is 500 liters.
The oils must be properly labeled to be eligible.
The oils submitted must be filtered; alternatively, unfiltered oils may be accepted provided they have been produced so that they contain less than 0.2% moisture and less than 0.02% impurities, and that these values are verified by an analysis. Oils must also correspond to commercially available brands, comply with current sector regulations, and specify the stock represented by each sample.
The olive trees from which the competing oils are obtained must be located in Catalonia.
