The Department of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, and Food, through PRODECA, has opened registration for Catalan companies to participate in the second edition of the Mercat de l’Oli Nou, which will take place November 20–22 at Plaça de Catalunya in Barcelona. Following the success of the first edition, the Mercat is expanding its offerings with a new section dedicated to Catalan honeys.
With this addition, the Mercat aims to highlight the quality, diversity, and origin of honeys produced in Catalonia, while also boosting the visibility of the Catalan beekeeping sector and expanding its role as a showcase for the country’s leading seasonal agri-food products.
The call for applications is open to both extra virgin olive oil producers and beekeepers and Catalan honey producers, who will be able to showcase and sell their products directly to the thousands of visitors who pass through Plaça de Catalunya each day. Interested companies can register through the PRODECA website. (call for olive oil companies – call for honey companies).
The New Olive Oil Market thus reinforces its mission to become the premier showcase for Catalonia’s seasonal agri-food products, promoting the consumption of locally sourced foods, direct contact between producers and consumers, and recognition of the quality of foods produced in the region.
More than 50,000 visitors at the first edition
This new edition follows the success of last year’s event. The first edition drew more than 50,000 visitors, who discovered, tasted, and purchased the first olive oil of the new harvest directly from the producers—extra virgin olive oils of extraordinary quality.
It was also very well received by the 50 participating companies, who particularly appreciated the opportunity to connect with the urban public. “The New Olive Oil Market is a unique opportunity to bring producers closer to the public and highlight the work behind each product. Direct contact allows us to explain their origin, quality, and uniqueness, while building trust and strengthening the bond between the region and the consumer,” says Prodeca Director Dèlia Perpiñà.
Product Sales, Culinary Tasting, and Activity Program
Visitors will be able to discover, taste, and purchase new olive oil and Catalan honey directly, while participating in a wide-ranging program of educational and culinary activities.
A highlight is the Olive Oil and Honey Workshop, a space dedicated to presentations, tastings, and cooking demonstrations led by industry professionals, chefs, and specialists, who will delve into the properties, quality, and culinary uses of both extra virgin olive oil and Catalan honey.
The Catalan wine bar, managed by INCAVI with the participation of winemakers, will also return, allowing visitors to pair the culinary tastings with local wines.
The gastronomic area will once again bring together a variety of culinary offerings prepared with locally sourced products, reinforcing the Mercat’s role as a venue for promoting Catalan cuisine as a whole.
With this second edition, Prodeca continues to promote an initiative that helps increase producers’ visibility, encourages direct sales, and brings the diversity and quality of Catalan agri-food products closer to consumers.
