The Lisbon Manifesto Drives an Unprecedented Alliance for EVOO and Health

The organizations that signed the Lisbon Manifesto will present the document to their governments, health care systems, and national authorities, as well as to international organizations. For its part, the Olive Oil World Congress is working to secure official recognition of EVOO as a functional food of importance to global public health, within the framework of a healthy, sustainable, and accessible Mediterranean diet.

The text outlines specific commitments on four fronts: including quantified recommendations for EVOO consumption in dietary guidelines and increasing its availability in hospitals, nursing homes, school cafeterias, and health centers; promoting research and training for healthcare professionals; ensuring the quality, authenticity, and traceability of the oil, with information on polyphenols included on the label; and promoting accurate communication to counter misinformation about fats.

The Lisbon Manifesto remains open to new signatories and can be downloaded in its entirety at this link.
