More than 80 organisations from 22 countries now support the Lisbon Manifesto: the OOWC opens the door to new signatories

The alliance around the Lisbon Manifesto, “Extra Virgin Olive Oil: Scientific Evidence for Global Health”, continues to grow. The document, promoted by the Olive Oil World Congress (OOWC), is now supported by more than 80 organisations from 22 countries in Europe, the Americas, Asia and Africa, joined by the international network Women in Olive Oil (WIOO). The OOWC is now inviting new organisations to join an initiative with a clear goal: to ensure that what science has demonstrated about extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) translates into real decisions on diet and public health.

The Lisbon Manifesto brings together the entire chain, from research to the consumer

The strength of the Lisbon Manifesto lies in the diversity of its signatories. They include research centres and universities, medical and nutrition societies, industry and interbranch associations, farmers’ organisations, designations of origin, companies in the sector, consumer organisations and public institutions. They come from 22 countries across four continents, both producing and consuming countries, and are joined by the Women in Olive Oil (WIOO) network. For the first time, those who generate scientific knowledge, those who apply it in clinical and nutritional practice, those who produce the oil and those who consume it share the same roadmap. This common vision strengthens the credibility of the message and its ability to reach public policymakers.

All signatories endorse a text with concrete commitments on four fronts: incorporating quantified EVOO consumption recommendations into dietary guidelines and strengthening its presence in hospitals, care homes, school canteens and health centres; promoting research and the training of health professionals; guaranteeing the quality, authenticity and traceability of the oil, with polyphenol information on labelling; fostering rigorous communication to counter misinformation about fats.
In addition, signatories undertake to bring the document to the attention of their governments, health systems and national authorities, as well as international bodies.

Join us: every signature counts

The OOWC calls on associations, companies, universities, research centres, public administrations and professional organisations from any country, whether producer or consumer, to sign up to the Lisbon Manifesto. Each new signature extends the document’s reach among governments, health systems and international bodies. It also adds weight to a shared goal: that EVOO should have the place in public health policy that the scientific evidence supports.

Joining is simple. Just write to info@oliveoilwc.com and the OOWC secretariat will send the document and instructions for formalising your endorsement. The full text of the manifesto is available at this link.
