OOWC will lead the way to efficient Plant Genetics and Production

The Olive Oil World Congress (OOWC), the most important international event for professionals in the olive oil and olive grove sector, which will take place from 26 to 28 June 2024 in Madrid, will focus on 'Genetics and Plant Production' with a block of lectures dedicated to this topic. Those interested in this first edition can register through this link in the different existing modalities.

Thus, the block will have the participation of experts and researchers of recognized prestige at national and international level. The first of them will be Álvaro Toledo, from FAO, to speak on 'International Treaty for the Exchange of Plant Genetic Resources in Agriculture ITRGFFA'.

This will be followed by a presentation entitled 'IOC International Olive Germplasm Bank Network', which will be given by Pablo Morello, head of the Olive Variety Testing Center at the University of Cordoba (UCO).

For his part, Hristofor Miho, researcher at the University of Cordoba (UCO), will focus on 'The genetic resources of the olive tree in the context of climate change: The role of the GEN4OLIVE project'. In his opinion, the researcher states that “participating in the World Olive Oil Congress is crucial due to its role as a platform for the exchange of knowledge between the different actors in the value chain, the transmission of the benefits of the product to society and the valorization of olive oil and professionals in the sector both in Spain and abroad. In addition, this event seeks to share experience and innovation within the industry, raise the profile of olive oil and improve the sector as a whole”.

Pedro Valverde, researcher at the University of Cordoba (UCO), will speak on 'Advances and challenges in olive cultivation'. “I think the OOWC is a good option to update knowledge in different aspects related to olive growing and olive oil, and also, due to the participation of both the public and private sector, it can be a good opportunity to establish contacts between different agents working with common objectives to establish collaborations”, assures the expert.

To conclude, Blanca Landa, researcher at the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), will speak on 'Securing the future of olive groves: Management of the main vascular diseases of the olive tree in the Mediterranean'.

About the OOWC:

The World Olive Oil Congress is an event that will bring together the world's leading speakers in each subject, generating knowledge about the new developments and innovations existing in each link of the value chain. It will bring together all operators in the sector worldwide, with the aim of joining forces to continue working together. Taking into account that Spain is the world leader in production, marketing and export of olive oil, it has been decided that the first edition would be held in Madrid in 2024, although the project began in 2023 with the promotional actions of “En route to the OOWC-2024”. After this first edition, the venue will be itinerant, although cross-congress activities will be developed around the world.
