The 1st International Symposium on Olive Oil and Health in Brazil, “Azeite e Saúde,” held in São Paulo, has represented a major qualitative leap in the international projection of the Olive Oil World Congress (OOWC), thanks to the broad impact it has achieved in Brazil’s media.
The symposium sparked notable news interest, with nearly a hundred mentions across digital media and national and regional print press. This media coverage has enabled the congress’s message to reach a very broad audience of consumers, healthcare professionals, and sector stakeholders, consolidating the OOWC as a global benchmark in scientific knowledge on olive oil and health
The media particularly highlighted the international nature of the meeting and the presence of renowned experts such as Dr. Miguel Ángel Martínez-González (University of Navarra and Harvard), Dr. Ramón Estruch (University of Barcelona), Dr. Andrea Romanos (Harvard University), Dr. Áureo Augusto Delgado, and nutritionist Mariana Del Bosco, among others, who discussed the latest evidence on the role of extra virgin olive oil in preventing chronic diseases and promoting health.
Media attention also focused on the great opportunity that Brazil represents for promoting nutritional education strategies, given that the average consumption of olive oil in the country is around 0.5 liters per person per year, well below the figures for Mediterranean countries. The published content highlighted the need to incorporate extra virgin olive oil as an essential element of a healthier diet, in line with the principles of the Mediterranean diet.
This communication success reinforces the role of the Olive Oil World Congress as a leading global congress, capable of generating high-impact events in different countries and mobilizing the main players in the olive oil value chain. The OOWC, whose first edition was held in Madrid in 2024, is thus consolidating its position as a global platform for knowledge exchange, innovation, and the promotion of olive oil at the international level.
To date, the OOWC has received support for its organization from institutions such as the International Olive Council (IOC); CIHEAM; the Mediterranean Diet Foundation; and various public and private entities, such as the Regional Government of Castile-La Mancha, with its Campo y Alma brand; SOM Gastronomia of the Generalitat de Catalunya; the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food of the Government of Spain, through “Alimentos de España”; the Ministry of Agriculture and Sea of Portugal; and the Madrid Institute for Rural, Agricultural and Food Research and Development (Imidra), as institutional sponsors. In the private sector, the congress has the support of AgroBank; GEA; the Interprofessional Association of Spanish Olive Oil; Gallo; and Filippo Berio.
