The International Olive Council (IOC) will organize a specialized workshop titled “Protected Designations of Origin and Protected Geographical Indications: Experiences and Tools” on 11 June 2026 at the IOC headquarters in Madrid.
Led by the Economic Affairs and Promotion Unit, the event will take place from 10:00 to 13:20 (Madrid time) and will be open free of charge to all interested participants, with the option of attending either in person, subject to availability, or online via videoconference. Simultaneous interpretation will be provided in English, French, and Spanish.
The workshop will examine the role of Protected Designations of Origin (PDOs) and Protected Geographical Indications (PGIs) in the olive oil sector. The Executive Secretariat will present its ongoing work on the collection and structuring of geographical indications. The discussion will explore how these systems contribute to quality assurance, product differentiation, market development, and the promotion of local knowledge and traditions. It will also address governance models, certification systems, legal protection, reliable production standards, market recognition, and future opportunities to strengthen international cooperation and the IOC’s activities in this field.
Bringing together experts and representatives from several olive oil–producing countries, the program will showcase international experiences and perspectives from Spain, Morocco, Argentina, and Greece. Discussions will cover topics such as governance models, certification systems, legal frameworks, quality standards, innovation, and future opportunities for origin-certified olive oil products.
Confirmed speakers include:
José Manuel Bajo Prados, expert from the General Secretariat of the Baena Designation of Origin, Spain
