The Lisbon Manifesto already brings together 34 institutions and companies from 13 countries

The Lisbon Manifesto, launched during the second edition of the Olive Oil World Congress (OOWC) held on 2 and 3 July at the Centro Cultural de Belém, continues to broaden its base of support. The document has now been endorsed by 34 institutions, research centres, public bodies, sector associations and companies from 13 countries, in addition to an international network of global scope.

The figure represents significant growth compared with the first count carried out after the congress and confirms that the text has moved beyond the strictly Mediterranean sphere. The initial support from Spain and Portugal has been joined by organisations from Brazil, Greece, Italy, Algeria, Iran, Pakistan, Croatia, Slovenia, Albania, Cyprus and Germany, a map that accurately reflects the expansion of olive growing and olive oil consumption beyond the Mediterranean basin.

Cross-cutting scientific and institutional backing
The signatory entities include some of the leading European research centres working on olive growing and health, such as the Estación Experimental del Zaidín (CSIC), the Biomedical Research Institute of Málaga (IBIMA), the University of Navarra, CITOLIVA and CIHEAM Zaragoza, alongside academic and scientific institutions from Portugal, Croatia, Slovenia and Albania.

The Ibero-American bloc is reinforced by the addition of the Brazilian Institute of Olive Growing (IBRAOLIVA), the Agricultural Research Corporation of Minas Gerais (EPAMIG), the National Institute of Science and Technology for Olive Growing and Olive Oil, and the Association of Olive Growers of the Contrafortes da Mantiqueira e Sudeste (ASSOOLIVE), at a time of rapid growth in Brazilian olive production.

Institutional representation is completed by the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries of Algeria (MADRP), while the associative sector contributes the backing of the Italian Association of the Olive Oil Industry (ASSITOL), the Greek association SEVITEL and the Portuguese associations APOAC and ADSAICA. They are joined by Women in Olive Oil, an international network bringing together professionals from the sector in more than forty countries.

A manifesto open to new signatories
The Lisbon Manifesto sets out the commitment of all these organisations to promoting olive oil and its relationship with health. The text remains open to endorsement by companies, institutions, universities, public administrations and professional organisations from any producing or consuming country.

Interested entities can formalise their endorsement by requesting the draft manifesto at info@oliveoilwc.com, and the OOWC secretariat will send them the document together with the corresponding instructions to sign up.

At the end of August the final document will be sent to all OOWC 2026 attendees and to other leading international organisations that have expressed an interest in signing it. The final Manifesto will be made public in the second week of September.
