From El Barcelonès to L’Alt Empordà, from El Gironès to El Montsià, from Les Garrigues to El Segrià, passing through El Vallès Occidental, El Baix Llobregat, Tarragona, La Terra Alta, La Noguera, La Selva, El Priorat… In total, 21 counties can be “toured and tasted” — without leaving Plaça Catalunya — thanks to the first-press extra virgin olive oils (EVOO) from 50 producers taking part in the 1st New Oil Market of Barcelona.
From November 21 to 23, this iconic city square will, for the first time, become the largest showcase of Catalan extra virgin olive oil — the finest in the country. An open market for everyone to buy the most precious oil: the first pressing. The event will also feature seasonal Catalan cuisine and a tasting classroom with talks and live demonstrations led by experts in olive oil culture.
Promoted by the Department of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, and Food of the Government of Catalonia, through PRODECA (the Promoter of Catalan Food Products), the event aims to bring extra virgin olive oil closer to the people of Barcelona. Above all, it seeks to highlight this deeply rooted culinary ingredient — a symbol of the Mediterranean diet — while giving visibility to the Catalan olive oil sector and strengthening the bond between producers and citizens
A Showcase of the Variety and Quality of Catalan EVOO
Through the 50 participating producers, the New Oil Market will offer visitors a diverse journey through the different olive oils made across Catalonia. Visitors will be able to taste not only oils from the prized and delicate arbequina olive of Les Garrigues and other areas of Camp de Tarragona, but also farga oils, representative of the genetic heritage of Les Terres de l’Ebre; grossal oils, found in El Pallars and El Montsec; crestaña and vera del montserratí varieties, typical of the Vallès counties and Central Catalonia; and argudell oils, a variety shaped by the Tramuntana winds and native to L’Alt Empordà.
Catalonia is home to more than 60 identified native olive varieties, yielding a wide range of extra virgin olive oils, many of which are protected under the five official Designations of Origin (PDOs): Les Garrigues, Siurana, Terra Alta, Baix Ebre-Montsià, and Empordà. Many of these oils are produced by cooperatives, while others are the result of the dedication of small or medium-sized producers.
This event will thus offer a unique opportunity to taste Catalonia through its liquid gold, as every bottle of EVOO carries the landscape, effort, and tradition of its makers. It’s also a chance to discover the oil’s versatility in the kitchen, learning tips and secrets about a product that, despite its prestige, remains surprisingly little known. Visitors can also purchase bottles directly from producers — no intermediaries.
A Free Culinary Experience for Everyone
Plaça Catalunya will not only become an open and free market, but also a hub of activities for families, young people, and food lovers.
There will be workshops and live cooking demonstrations at the gastronomic classroom, with chefs from all over Catalonia; food trucks offering local, seasonal cuisine featuring the new oil as the star ingredient; a Catalan wine bar for pairing tastings; and a tasting area with tables and chairs where visitors can enjoy the lively market atmosphere.
In short, this event will combine gastronomy, culture, and education. A showcase and market set to become a must-attend annual event on the gastronomic calendar of both Barcelona and all of Catalonia. It debuts this November 2025, coinciding with the year when Catalonia is named World Region of Gastronomy, reaffirming the central role of local products and Catalan cuisine.
