As part of the activities scheduled under the umbrella “On the Road to the OOWC 2026,” the World Olive Oil Congress (OOWC) has organized the symposium “Azeite e Saúde” (Olive Oil and Health) on November 12, 2025, to be held at the Arab-Brazilian Chamber of Commerce (CCAB). The event will bring together international experts to discuss the role of olive oil in health, its quality, and its culinary potential.
The opening session will feature the Presidency of OLIVA and representatives from Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture and Ministry of Trade.
From a global perspective, the session “Olive Oil in Today’s World” will be presented, followed by a keynote lecture by Dr. Miguel Ángel Martínez (Harvard University, USA) on the Mediterranean diet and its effects on health.
Next, a roundtable discussion will address the impacts of olive oil consumption on human health, featuring Dr. Andrea Romanos (Harvard University, USA), Dr. Ramón Estruch (University of Barcelona, Spain), and Dr. Áureo Augusto Delgado (gastroenterologist, member of the Brazilian Federation of Gastroenterology and the Young GI Committee of the World Gastroenterology Organization, Brazil), moderated by Rita Basi, President of OLIVA.
The program will also include a presentation of the World Olive Oil Congress (OOWC) 2026 by Ricardo Migueláñez, General Coordinator of the OOWC, along with technical sessions focused on quality and authenticity. Teresa Pérez (Interprofessional Association of Olive Oil, Spain) will explain how to understand the physical, chemical, and sensory characteristics of the product; Mariana Matos (Casa do Azeite, Portugal) will detail the factors that determine quality “from the olive to the bottle”; and chef and communicator Beto Almeida (Brazil) will showcase the versatility of olive oil in Brazilian cuisine.
The day will conclude with an open debate and a tasting experience, offering attendees the opportunity to sample olive-oil-based products and learn about the brands represented.
The OOWC continues its mission to promote knowledge about olive oil, supported by institutions such as the International Olive Council (IOC), CIHEAM, and the Mediterranean Diet Foundation, as well as various public and private organizations including the Regional Government of Castilla-La Mancha, SOM Gastronomia of the Generalitat of Catalonia, Foods from Spain, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, and the Madrid Institute for Rural, Agricultural and Food Research and Development (IMIDRA) as institutional sponsors. On the private side, the Congress is supported by AgroBank as platinum sponsor and GEA as gold sponsor.
