The OOWC is presented from Madrid to the world

The Olive Oil World Congress (OOWC) presented at the International Olive Council (IOC) its first edition, that will be held on 26, 27 and 28 June 2024 in the auditorium of the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) in Madrid. An edition in which operators from more than 50 countries will participate, which will address the main developments and challenges facing the olive grove and olive oil for the upcoming years, such as: climate change, product quality and safety, water, sustainability, and marketing, but also analyze the opportunities offered by this food in relation to health, the main ‘driver’ of consumption today in many countries.

The presentation was attended by Jaime Lillo, IOC executive director; Antonio Rodríguez de Liévana Sahagún, deputy director general of International Relations and Community Affairs of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food; and Ricardo Migueláñez, OOWC general coordinator. In addition, it has had the support of diplomatic representatives from more than 20 producing countries, which further underlines the global interest in this congress.

Jaime Lillo was the first to take the floor, highlighting the importance of this event as a joint impulse for the world olive oil sector. He also expressed his gratitude to His Majesty the King Felipe VI for the presidency of the Honorary Committee of the OOWC, as well as the participation of Luis Planas, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food in this body of the congress.

For his part, Rodríguez de Liévana stressed the importance of the olive oil sector for Spain. Beyond its role in the food industry, he underlined its capacity to generate employment, wealth, preserve the landscape, promote a healthy diet, influence health, and enrich the country's culture.

Migueláñez presented to the attendees the main news of the OOWC and indicated that "the initiative is born in Spain, which is the main world producer, although it has an international vocation and that other countries will be able to host the following editions every two years". "In addition, the OOWC aims to become a platform that not only has activity during each congress but can develop activities to promote knowledge throughout the year, both in terms of olive groves and olive oil in the world, involving operators from both producing and consuming areas".

The OOWC will serve to enhance the value of olive oil and transmit its benefits to society, but it will also gather professionals from the sector worldwide, which will promote the transfer of knowledge about this product by creating a global network to exchange experiences and develop new R&D&i projects in which experts from all over the world will collaborate.
